Carsten Beck - Abstract composition 01
Technique: Oil on canvas
Artist Biography: Danish artist Carsten Beck (b. 1986) lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. His paintings can be considered a Scandinavian minimalist expression transferred to oil on canvas. The paintings are a mixture of a geometric perspective on shapes and forms with a mathematical attention to detail and high quality materials. Beck's background in printmaking and photography gives the artist options to see different perspectives in his art, creating new geometric shapes in a powerful and contradictory color scheme.Beck's major inspiration for creating his artwork is often going for long walks to capture new perspectives and angles. He translates this inspiration into new sketches and ideas. Beck tries to relate his work to mid-century art while drawing inspiration from it; one of his favorite architects is AlvarAalto. His art does not necessarily need to represent or reflect anything other than the fact that it is a painting. Sometimes things don't have to make sense or represent something concrete. It's really about the composition, as well as the balance between black and white; from the layering of colors to the placement of figures. The symmetrical and asymmetrical aspects must be on point from the beginning. There is a difficulty in making the simple look interesting, and Beck likes to challenge himself.Carsten Beck is constantly looking to the past to rework and redefine old concepts and ideas, to create new content. The biggest difference is that he has found his way into concrete art and has begun to explore it.
