Description
Mercedes Azpilicueta - The Captive II

Artist Biography: Mercedes Azpilicueta is an Argentinian artist currently living in the Netherlands. Her work is characterized by the use of different media, including performance, drawing, sculpture, and video, to explore themes such as identity, femininity, and representation. In her work, Azpilicueta focuses on the exploration of voice, body, and language, using a variety of techniques and materials to create pieces that move between the abstract and the figurative. Many of his works have a strong performative dimension, inviting the viewer to participate in the creation of the meaning of the work. Azpilicueta has received several awards and recognitions throughout his career. In 2019, she won the Gasworks Art Prize in London, which included a three-month artist residency in the city. In 2017, she was selected to participate in the artistic residency program of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, and in 2018 she received the Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst Prize, one of the most prestigious art awards in the Netherlands. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and Latin America, and her innovative and provocative style has made her one of the most interesting and relevant artists of her generation.

Mercedes Azpilicueta investigates the social structures that shape our behavior and modes of expression, and then dismantles them with the expressiveness of her body, sound pieces and installations. 'La Cautiva' refers to the story of Lucía Miranda, a European woman who was captured in the 16th century by the Argentinean indigenous population and whose literature transformed into the stereotype of the white captive by the indigenous people, giving rise to a biblical and discursive cycle. whose scope goes far beyond the canonical expressions of the 19th century, turning the Captive into "the body of the homeland" in Argentina. Mercedes Azpilicueta evokes with this work a baroque viscerality that is no longer only European, but also colonial, and even postmodern; a movement that Azpilicueta understands as a transhistorical force, or an expressive drive that ignites language, meaning and aesthetic forms.
