Description
Gerardo Delgado - Fire IX

Technique: Mixed on wood

Artist Biography: Self-taught in his artistic training, Gerardo Delgado (Seville, Spain, 1942) studied architecture between 1959 and 1967 at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Sevilla. In 1967 he received, in its third call, the Painting Prize "La Pasarela" for two geometric reliefs that the viewer can handle to create his own compositions. From that moment on he dedicated himself to painting, working the space under the control of geometry. Between 1969 and 1971 he took part in the Seminar of automatic generation of plastic forms at the University of Madrid. He combines his work in the field of the Arts with his teaching work, being professor of Architectural Form Analysis at the School of Architecture of Seville between 1968 and 1990 and from 1996 he joins the Department of Projects. In 1982 he began to work continuously in graphic design and the mounting of exhibitions, both in the Fundación La Caixa in Madrid and in other institutions, taking part in more than 70 exhibitions. Between 1978 and 1981 he is a founding member of the magazine "Separata" of literature, art and thought. In 1984 he moved his studio to Olivares, his hometown, and it is from that moment when making series of works becomes his working system and his painting shows a growing interest in mixing order and chaos; starting from pure geometric approaches he creates sharp contrasts of shapes and colors. With a broad and extensive artistic career, he has had countless exhibitions in various parts of Spain as well as in Brazil, Peru, USA, France, Moscow, ... and in 2017 the Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art organized the retrospective exhibition "Gerardo Delgado, learning from all things" where we could enjoy a panoramic view of his work.

Work belonging to the series "Small broken windows": four rectangles separated by two central lines, one vertical and one horizontal. The formal development of the works creates irregular and asymmetrical surfaces, full of dynamic counterpoints, two opposing and superimposed worlds of opposing geometries.
