Artist Biography: Mel Bochner (Pittsburgh, 1940) is an American conceptual artist and pioneer of conceptual art, recognized for his work in painting, drawing and sculpture. His style is characterized by his use of writing and words, which he uses to explore language and communication, and to challenge the conventions of traditional art.Bochner is known for his use of handwriting technique, which he combines with visual elements to create works that challenge the notion of what art is. He often employs bright, contrasting colors to highlight the chosen word or phrase, and his works can be read as both visual and textual pieces.Throughout his career, Bochner has received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including the Skowhegan Medal for Painting/Conceptual Art Award in 2011, the Vienna City Government Contemporary Art Award in 2009 and the City of Frankfurt Contemporary Art Award in 2006.
