Steve Afif - Himmelweg III
Technique: Oil painting
Artist Biography:Born in Alexandria in 1943, he was deported to London when he was just 14 years old, after the city ceased to be a British colony under Nasser's mandate. There, he studied at the Byam School of Art and later at the Royal Academy of Arts. In the late 1960s, he took up residence in Mallorca, where he found "his second home" and where he enjoyed "tremendous freedom to be anonymous". Steve Afif's work ranges from painting to sculpture, but it is in the field of drawing that he defined his broad range of technique and content. He used pencil, India ink, watercolor, ballpoint pen, gouache, marker.... "I like drawing for its immediacy, for its confessional aspect. If I knew how, and found the voice, I would write. There is a writer underneath my drawings, but don't ask me for narrative coherence".
