Rafael Sanz Lobato - Geometric Construction, Gelatin silver on paper, 50 x 60 cm, 2004.
Technique: Silver gelatin
Artist Biography:Rafael S. Lobato (Seville, August 5, 1932-Madrid, April 22, 2015)1 was a Spanish photographer, National Photography Award in 2011, "for his expertise in showing the transformation of the rural world". His family moved to live in Madrid in 1941 and in 1956 he bought his first camera.3 In 1964 he took part in the Real Sociedad Fotográfica de Madrid. In 1965 with other photographers he founded the group La Colmena. When the group disappeared, he participated in the creation of Grupo 5.4 His work focuses on traditional country scenes, images of provincial towns and their traditional festivities, as well as portraits, which is why he has been considered a pioneer in this type of anthropological photography. Other pioneers of the School of Madrid were Carlos Hernández Corcho, Juan Dolcet and Manuel Cruzado Cazador.5 He was a member of a generation between 1950 and 1970.6 In 1971 he left the Royal Photographic Society due to differences with Gerardo Vielba and soon after became a professional photographer.3 The Ministry of Culture, in awarding him the National Prize, emphasized the coherence and solidity of his work, which "constitutes a bridge between the new neo-realist avant-garde of the postwar period and the methods of photographic observation after 1968."
