Johann Ryno de Wet - All That Remains, Camera Obscura Collection
Technique: Digital printing on Epson Premium High Gloss paper
Artist Biography: The territory of dreams continues to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration and, even more, there are people who seem to walk through it in full wakefulness. There can be no other explanation for the risky and chimerical photographs of Johann Ryno de Wet (Johannesburg, South Africa, 1982). Ryno effectively employs the digital technique to transform a point of departure into a point of arrival that is only in his head. The Freudian concept of "the unsettling uncanny" (Unheimlich) is his starting point in a tangible reality that he metamorphoses until it becomes unrecognizable, displaced and threatening. Ryno invents post-apocalyptic landscapes, empty of human presence, and of desolate and disquieting appearance that are nevertheless of an indescribable beauty. Rarely has artifice been more justified than in Ryno's work, because it opens the doors to a fictional and fantastic world, authentically personal, present in public collections as important as Photo Elysée and CA2M, as well as in private collections around the world.
