Joaquín Capa - Luminous Blue

Technique: Etching and aquatint

Artist Biography: Joaquín Capa is an artist born in Santander in 1941. He studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in Madrid, as well as philosophy in Madrid and Rome, architecture in Madrid and sociology of art in Paris. He also researched new techniques for Print at W.S. Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. He was awarded a scholarship by the Juan March Foundation between 1975 and 1976, as well as by the Ministry of Culture between 1983 and 1984, and has been a visiting professor at the University of Baroda in 1983, 1989 and 1990, where he also won the Grand Prize at the First International Biennale of Bhopal in 1989, and for this reason he maintains an intimate relationship with the Indian territory. He also received the First Prize at the Cairo Biennale in 1994. His work has been exhibited in several cities in Spain, as well as in Utrecht and Maastricht in Holland.Capa is a renowned printmaker and painter. He taught courses at the University of Fine Arts in Barode, India, at the International Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Betanzos, A Coruña, and in Mexico, Rome and Slovenia. Among the awards won by the artist are the Grand Prize at the Bhopal Biennale, India, 1989 and the First Prize at the Cairo Biennale, Egypt, 1994. His work can be found in museums and collections around the world, such as the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museo de Arte Abstracto de Cuenca, Museo Municipal de Santander, Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, National Museum of Prague, Kunsthaus in Zurich, Los Angeles Country Museum, L.A. Bharat Bhavan of Bhopal, National Museum of Egypt, 20th Century Collection, Royal Albert I Library of Brussels, National Art Museum of Hanoi and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon.

Materials and care
Recommendations for the proper conservation of works of art:
  • Keep works of art away from direct sunlight and any other source of heat (heating, air conditioning, etc.). Avoid hanging works of art near smoky and polluted areas (such as fireplaces or kitchens). We advise you to protect the paintings with a glass frame.
  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature. It is recommended to keep the paintings in areas with an ambient temperature of between 18-20º and 50% relative humidity.
  • If the work is to be permanently illuminated, we recommend the use of cold light bulbs. Use a soft feather duster for periodic cleaning of the work. Never use household cleaner.
