Jesuys Crystiano - untitled
Artist Biography: Jesuys Crystiano is a Brazilian artist who spent much of his adult life wandering the streets of Ilheus (Bahia), until a German hotelier took him in in 2010 and provided him with material to capture his surreal universes on paper. During the last four years of his life, Jesuys was able to produce hundreds of drawings with colored pencils and charcoal, often enhanced with collages and annotations. His universes are populated with airplanes, vultures, fish, soccer players, overturned chairs and tables, as well as uprooted tree trunks. The artist, who suffered from schizophrenia, not only inverted the motifs of his paintings, but also turned tables and chairs upside down, plucked flowers from the hotel garden and planted them in such a way that their roots soared skyward, when he was not stealing children's toys to bury them. Jesuys was part of a major exhibition at the Gugging museum in Austria in 2022, where the Treger Saint-Silvestre (Portugal) gross art collection was presented. Jesuys' biography is fragmentary, but it is believed that he was born in 1950 and grew up in Buerarema, in the state of Bahia, and spent his youth in Rio de Janeiro. When he was found seriously injured in a ditch in 2011, the hotelier offered him accommodation in one of his rooms where he would live out his final days. The artist produced a very significant body of work in a short period of time thanks to the help he received, and this allowed his work to be recognized and presented in important exhibitions.
