GEMA POLANCO - I decided to take care of myself
Artist Biography:
A large vibrant blue cloth, like a banner, warns us from the entrance: "I decided to take care of myself". It is a cry, but not a war cry. There is no combativeness, there is no hint of revenge and there is no fight, except the internal one. It is, instead, a declaration of intentions. Gema Polanco's works take us to a world of self-care, of spaces of refuge, of confessions, of advice, like the advice you give to your friends when you know they are incapable of freeing the voices in their own heads. They are that embrace you need so much when loneliness reigns; when trying so hard to take care of others, you have neglected yourself. The late-night venting call to the friend who is always there to listen to you, even if you feel like a vinyl stuck on the turntable needle and always emitting the same note, in a loop. When all you need is a friendly voice that says: "it's going to be all right". In the words of the artist: "Working from the intimate to make visible or tell our realities both to liberate you and to normalize it is a form of resistance, struggle and empowerment both for us as individuals and as a society". (Text of the exhibition Built a home and watched it burn)
