Enrique Marty - Untitled, from the series "Non-melancholic scenes".
Artist Biography:
"Non-melancholic scenes" is a series of small format paintings that refer, in terms of technique and codes of representation, to the paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries. The technique, the format, the themes and the symbolism are intended to create a sense of enigma, soliciting our attentive observation. Although we are confronted with situations whose codes imply narratives, we are left disoriented by the lack of anything coherent or substantial to hold on to. Even the title, which denies the melancholy by adding to its expectation, is enigmatic in itself. The works, in fact, depict scenes from antiquity, with modern elements interspersed, occurring in twilight. Genres such as mythology, landscapes, religion, portraiture, heroism, and cabinet paintings are also strategically employed as conceptual tools, creating fascination and confusion in a minefield of unhinged symbols. (Lauren Wiggers)
