Artist Biography: Carmen Calvo Sáenz de Tejada was born in Valencia on April 7, 1950. She studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of San Carlos de Valencia and soon began to stand out in the art world thanks to her multifaceted work.Calvo became one of the most relevant conceptual artists in Spain, characterized by a strong social criticism and a very personal vision of the world. Her work is based on the recovery of everyday and cultural elements of society, with a very own aesthetic characterized by the use of various technical and thematic resources.Throughout her career, Calvo has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums, galleries and national and international art centers. In 2013, she received the National Plastic Arts Award from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport in recognition of her career. In addition, in 2014 she was named an academic of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos of Valencia.Among the themes she addresses in her work are violence, oppression, identity, memory and popular culture. His style is characterized by the use of heterogeneous materials such as wood, found objects, photographs and paint.
