Bonifacio Alfonso - WITHOUT TITLE

Artist Biography: Bonifacio Alfonso Gómez Fernández, better known as Bonifacio Alfonso, was born in San Sebastián on June 19, 1933. He was an outstanding Spanish painter and engraver, who stood out for his informalist style, located between surrealism and abstract expressionism.Despite his origin in San Sebastian, Bonifacio Alfonso did not fit into the local tradition of the Basque school, but was more related to the abstract school of Cuenca, being influenced by foreign figures such as Roberto Matta, Willem de Kooning, Pierre Alechinsky and the Cobra group. His work was praised by the sculptor Jorge Oteiza and he exhibited in several European countries, receiving several awards, such as the National Prize of Print in 1993 and the Arts Prize of the Community of Madrid in 2005.Throughout his career, Bonifacio Alfonso held numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout Spain, highlighting his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1978 and his retrospective at the Reina Sofia Museum in 1992.His work was characterized by the use of mixed techniques, the use of matter and texture, as well as the use of color and line in an expressive way, managing to create his own unmistakable language. He died on December 16, 2011, leaving behind a work of great quality and personality, which places him as one of the masters of contemporary Spanish art.

Our gallery participates in the Fig Bilbao 2021 Fair presenting the suite "AVANTI VAPORINI" with works made by BONIFACIO between 1996 and 2011. The exhibition consists of 29 color lithographs that make up the suite, 6 preparatory drawings that are part of those that served as the basis for the execution of the lithographs, printed by Antonio Gayo and two lithographic stones drawn by Bonifacio.
