Description
Alejandra Glez - Self-Portrait

Technique: Light box printing

Artist Biography: Alejandra Glez (Cuba, 1996) is a multidisciplinary artist. She uses photography, photomontage, installation, performance and video art as a vehicle to express herself freely, break taboos and explore her inner world and her own experiences, as well as those of the women around her in a search for connection in which the viewer also participates. Her work, focused on female identity through carefully elaborated staging and resources such as serialization, reveals many of her conflicts, questions and interests, such as the role of women in today's society, the decoding of the female nude, or the perception of nudity as something natural, among others. Glez has been recognized with numerous awards and grants, such as the one granted by the Norwegian Embassy in Cuba and the Fugaz: arte de convivir residency in Peru, in 2018. She has also taken part in important projects, such as an exhibition at CEART in Fuenlabrada, Madrid, in 2019 and her participation as Cuba's representative at the Havana Biennial that same year. In 2021 he received the Young Photography Award from the Enaire Foundation, which is accompanied by an exhibition at the Botanical Garden of Madrid within the framework of PHotoESPAÑA.

Alejandra Glez (Havana, 1996) is a young multidisciplinary artist with a great international career and an increasing presence in Spain, as evidenced by her recent Young Photography Award from the Enaire Foundation and her current exhibition at MIA Art Collection. She is one of the great promises of contemporary photography, including in her production installation, video art and performance to explore her inner world and her own experiences, as well as those of the women around her to break taboos such as the female nude and the role of women in society. Her latest series "Liliths" highlights, on the one hand, the complex relationships between gender and race and, on the other, reclaims the power of this biblical figure rejected by society and that of all women who can identify with her. "The strength of each of the series (from the most recent "Lilith" to the oldest) speak of a closeness with the natural seeking precisely communion and subversion. Connecting with the spiritual that each one of us has, but also questioning those imposed patterns that we have inherited. The strength of Gonzalez's work is in itself, in its ability to summarize and bring together multiple influences and turn them into series full of meaning, of powerful essence of the feminine. A small sample of all the power and possibility that González and her work embody. A jewel to approach her work and not lose sight of it." -Semíramis González
