Artist Biography: Veronica Ruth Frias (Spain, 1978) is a Spanish feminist contemporary artist based in Malaga, her works are formed by performances in which the body is subject to the work. She graduated in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. Appropriation, costumes and tattoos are some of her tools with which she places her body at the service of art and transforms the personal into artistic practices. Sarcasm, irony and humor are fundamental for the artist, although she deals with very serious issues such as the construction of the feminine, motherhood, violence against women or discrimination against women in the history of art. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions including Super M at ECCO in Cadiz, Narraciones Extra(ordinarías) at ABA Art Gallery in Palma de Mallorca or Yo quiero mucho a mi mamá at Tula Prins Gallery in Cordoba, and has received grants and awards such as the INICIARTE Production Grant from the Junta de Andalucía, the Rafael Botí Grant from the Rafael Botí Provincial Foundation of Plastic Arts in Cordoba, the DESENCAJA Plastic Arts Contest in Malaga or the X Pepe Espaliú Plastic Arts Contest, also in Cordoba.

 

Verónica Ruth Frías (Córdoba, 1978) uses disguise, make-up and camouflage to acquire other identities, and to carry out a body of performative work that has an acid and frontal critique on gender issues. We have seen her as Little Red Riding Hood, God's Daughter at the Last Supper, Super Heroine, kidnapper and, through all these characters and many more, Frias, tells us what worries her, what outrages her, and makes us question the roles of women in today's society, reaffirming her position in a man's world and, in her case, in the art world. In her works there is always a touch of irreverent humor. She works mainly with performance and uses video and photography to record her ephemeral actions. For some years he has been using tools such as Facebook to propose collective works in which he asks for the open and free participation of the public, of the citizens, of the people. Her works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Verónica Ruth Frías has worked with curators such as Mariana Hormaechea, Nerea Ubieto, Adonay Bermúdez, Fernando Gómez de la Cuesta, Margarita Aizpuru, Javier Díaz Guardiola, Juan Ramón Barbancho and Ángel Luis Pérez Villén. She is a tireless worker and says that, even if her teeth are missing, she will continue to take bites.
