Sergio Barrera - Rhizomes (negative) #11
Artist Biography: Thought and reflection, meditation and discovery. The painting of Sergio Barrera (Valencia, 1967) is unleashed from the anonymous gesture of the brushstroke, squeezing its own contradictions and historical conventions. Barrera calls it antiquity and confesses to developing a type of pictorial register that synthesizes the essential constants of a brushstroke. All the spontaneity associated with the gesture is subverted in an indirect, cold and calculating process, with a fine brush. Sergio Barrera's work has been part of exhibitions at the Centro del Carme Cultura Contemporània, Fundación Bancaja (Valencia), Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras, MACA Museum of Contemporary Art (Alicante) or Centro de Creación Contemporánea Matadero (Madrid) In 2017 he was part of the IVAM Produce project of the IVAM Valencian Institute of Modern Art.
