Laia Abril - Ala Kachuu, Bride Kidnapping, Kyrgyzstan
Technique: Inkjet printing on Hahnemühle Fibre Matt paper
Artist Biography:The long-term project "A History of Misogyny" is a visual investigation through historical and contemporary comparisons. In her second chapter, "On Rape," Abril focuses on institutional rape through a series of conceptual portraits that, along with testimonies, symbolize the different systemic cultures of rape. Abril uses history to trace the origin of laws and beliefs. This includes legislations that force victims to marry their rapists, rape used as a weapon of war, the false construction of virginity or the origin of the "rape schedule," which makes women reconsider their daily routines to protect themselves from possible harm. Through this investigative journey, Abril invites the public to experience her reactions in the form of audio, text and visual installations. ON RAPE "By looking back in history, I seek to identify gender stereotypes and myths, as well as prevalent global prejudices and misconceptions that perpetuate rape culture. In order to avoid fueling systemic victim-blaming in society, I decided to shift the visual narrative from victim to institutions, allowing this project to serve as an opportunity to address transgenerational trauma and social responsibility."
