Julio Falagán - Untitled
Technique: Painting and assemblage on fabrics and popular paintings.
Artist Biography: With a degree in Fine Arts and C.A.P. from the University of Salamanca, Julio Falagán (Valladolid, 1979) has been making a name for himself in the Spanish contemporary art scene since he was young. This is evidenced by recognitions such as the Mention of Honor in Generations04 of Caja Madrid, the Casa de Velázquez Scholarship, the Young Art Painting Award of the Junta de Castilla y León, among others. At the same time important institutions have hosted his exhibitions such as the Casa Encendida, the Matadero and the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, the Da2 in Salamanca, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid. Julio Falagán's work takes painting as a starting point. But precisely that which circulates in real life and which he acquires by buying "ready-made paintings" at flea markets. Falagán appropriates conventional scenes or landscapes to fill them with objects extraos that coexist without difficulty aided by annotations and captions. As captions, or vignette texts, the annotations resolve the surprising relationships between the native characters in the paintings, and the invaders or newcomers. Their incisions literally turn the painting into a vignette. Falagán's irony is shown in associations in which he always counts on the viewer as an agent involved in the unfolding of meanings and in the unexpected twists and turns reminiscent of advertising or media slogans.
