Artist Biography: Julián Gil (Logroño, 1936) is a renowned Spanish painter specializing in concrete art, whose works have inspired future generations of abstract artists. He began his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts in Logroño in 1954, continuing at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1958. In 1963, he became a Doctor of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also taught during his professional career.Gil was part of the "New Generation" group that was created in the sixties and the "No Group of Madrid" from the eighties, standing out in the Spanish constructivist movement along with other artists such as Soledad Sevilla, Waldo Balart, Tomás García Asensio and Cruz Novillo.Gil's production is composed of different series in which he uses mathematical formulas and color theories to create geometric and concrete works of art, completely distancing himself from the representation of the natural. His careful analysis of forms and acute perception of color allow him to create different chromatic and formal variations with surprising results.Gil's works are in important public and private collections nationally and internationally, and he has exhibited with other prominent representatives of constructivism and concrete art, such as the Germans Diet Sayler, Hartmut Böhm, and Manfred Mohr, the Swiss Rita Ernst, and the British John Carter. With more than five decades of artistic career, Julián Gil is a reference of concrete art in Spain and the world.
