Juan Antonio Aguirre - Untitled
Technique: Acrylic on cardboard
Artist Biography: Juan Antonio Aguirre (Madrid, 1945 - 2016) is considered a unique definer of the New Generation, which meant a break with informalism and marked the emergence of pop in Spain, as well as the post-pop movements and the new geometry. He was a central figure in the Amadis Gallery group, a group concerned with promoting the most important artists of 1970s Spain, such as Carlos Alcolea, Carlos Franco, Luis Gordillo, Santiago Serrano and José María Yturralde. Aguirre's painting moves in the field of figuration, sometimes influenced by naïf art. He soon adopts a neoconstructivist style; a style that, under the influence of Bonnard, Matisse or Munch, is characterized by a vibrant coloring and the representation of blurred forms. Among the themes he proposes are still lifes that reflect his attention to the most trivial objects and plastic, interior landscapes and characters that present references to autobiographical experiences. In 1999 the IVAM Valencian Institute of Modern Art held a retrospective of his career. His work is part of museums and public collections such as IVAM Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (Valencia), MNCARS Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid) or Museo Patio Herreriano Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Español (Valladolid).
