José Manuel Egea - untitled
Technique: acrylic marker on photographic film
Artist Biography: José Manuel Egea, a young Spanish artist from Madrid, has been a great admirer of Marvel Comics superheroes, in particular Jack Russel, the werewolf, since the age of 10. His fascination with the transformation of the human being into a beast is at the heart of his work produced since 2010 at the creation center "under the hat", which welcomes people with intellectual disabilities.Egea composes his works using characters found in magazines that he transforms into wolves, covering the image with pen until they disappear, giving way to the monster. The direction and intensity of the pen or marker are fundamental to provoke the emergence of the beast. Egea invokes the animal that lies within the portrait subject and struggles to emerge by making the lines in the direction the hair flows from the face. For Egea, it is not difficult to connect with the "lobura" that resides beneath people's appearance, as he himself has experienced crises during which his need to howl to calm down and his passion for smashing things manifest themselves. There is also a series of words or phrases that attract him and that he mysteriously repeats while drawing. His works are part of important European collections, such as that of Antoine de Galbert and Laurent Dumas.
