Elina Brotherus - Head with Closed Eyes/Head with Open Eyes, part 1 & 2
Artist Biography: Elina Brotherus (Helsinki, Finland, 1972) is one of Europe's most acclaimed photographers. His means of expression are both photography and video. In his early works he dealt with personal but at the same time universal experiences: the presence and absence of love. In her series "The New Painting" (2000-05), Elina tested the relationship between photography and art history and found inspiration in the iconography of classical painting. In "Model Studies" (2002-08) and "Artist and her model" (2005-11) he continued to explore the human figure in the landscape, and the artist's gaze towards his model. In her projects "12 ans après" (2011-12), "Annonciation" (2009-13) and "Carpe Fucking Diem" (2011-15) Elina takes up the autobiographical approach, although in a more distanced way than in her youth. More recently, he has revisited the Fluxus event scores and other written instructions intended for performance in the 1950s and '70s. This earned him the Prix Carte Blanche PMU which was presented with a solo exhibition of "Règle du Jeu" (2016-17) at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2017.
