Elina Brotherus - Listener
Artist Biography: Elina Brotherus (Helsinki, Finland, 1972) is the most reputed artist of the influential Helsinki School of Photography, and one of the most acclaimed visual artists in Europe. Her work is present in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, CA2M, MAXXI, and Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, among many others. In his early works he dealt with personal but at the same time universal experiences: the presence and absence of love. In her series "The New Painting" (2000-05), Elina tested the relationship between photography and art history and found inspiration in the iconography of classical painting. In "Model Studies" (2002-08) and "Artist and her model" (2005-11) she continued to explore the human figure in the landscape, and the artist's gaze towards her model. In her projects "12 ans après" (2011-12), "Annonciation" (2009-13) and "Carpe Fucking Diem" (2011-15) Elina revisits the autobiographical approach, albeit in a more distanced way than in her youth. More recently, she has revisited Fluxus "event scores" and other written instructions intended for performance from the 1950s-70s. This earned him the Carte Blanche PMU Prize which was presented with a solo exhibition of "Règle du Jeu" (2016-17) at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2017. Elina is undoubtedly a woman on a mission.
