British artist Simon Callery is the latest addition to the gallery's team of artists. In this 12th edition of APERTURA Madrid Gallery Weekend 2021 they present their first solo exhibition in Spain. Simon Callery's works called "flat-paintings" emphasize materiality and are often made in direct contact with the environment, taking advantage of the surfaces that make up the landscape. The artist has collaborated with the School of Archaeology at Oxford University for many years using the setting of archaeological excavations as part of his creative process. In these paintings the canvases are scored, cut, perforated, soaked in highly color-saturated tempera paint and stitched, so that they reveal all sorts of holes and cavities. Callery states that he works "to bring painting back to what it was and, as a result, to gain a better awareness of ourselves."
