Laura González Cabrera - I don't want to sleep. Nemuriguse #2, Acrylic on paper 65 x 113 cm. 2000 euro

Technique: Acrylic

Artist Biography: Laura González Cabrera (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1976). She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Salamanca (USAL). She received the DKV Award for best Spanish artist (2015) and the Gold Medal at the Biennial of architecture Miami + Beach (2009). She has been awarded a grant by the City of Paris for a residency at the Centre Les Récollets (2019). Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions within institutions and museums, as well as in different galleries and national and international fairs. Among them we should highlight the following: MediaLab Prado, Madrid (2021); the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (2020); CAAM de las Palmas de G.C. (2020, 2013 and 2008); Centro de Arte La Regenta (2019); Museo de Pollença, Mallorca (2018); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la Fundación Naturgy (MAC) , La Coruña (2018); Fundación Canaria para el desarrollo de la Pintura (2017); Today Art Museum, Pekin (2016); TEA of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (2016); Museum of Huelva (2015); International Museum of Art in Lanzarote (2011); Fate Festival, San Potito Sannitico, Naples (2009); IX Biennial of Dakar Off, Senegal (2008) and La Casa Encendida in Madrid (2007). His work is part of public and private collections such as Los Bragales; Pilar Citoler; TEA Espacio de las Artes; DKV insurance; Fundación Canaria para el Desarrollo de la Pintura; Fundación DIDAC; Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM); Gobierno de Canarias and Cabildo de Gran Canaria. ? Since 2007, the word and its staging in space has been one of the main axes of development of Laura González Cabrera's work. This explains her interest in writing and painting as a record of an action. The form thus becomes the residue of a practice, the gesture becomes a minimum unit of information and its reiteration a kind of "mantra". It is a gesture computed and ordered in reticular structures where color, stroke and letter invite the viewer to scrutinize the surfaces in search of meaning. His entire process is determined in advance through numerical, chromatic and geometric transformation rules and is materialized by a procedure that rigorously responds to invariable protocols close to those of a ritual. It connects the visible with the invisible, that is, the written word with the experience it evokes, a link that translates into a symbolic illegibility.

Since 2007, words and their placement in space have been one of the main points of development for Laura Gonzalez Cabrera's work. This explains her interest in writing and painting to express actions. Form becomes all that remains of this practice, gestures become the smallest unit of information and reiterating them becomes a kind of mantra. They are gestures calculated and ordered into reticular structures where color, strokes and letters invite the viewer to scrutinize surfaces in search of some sense. The whole process is determined in advance with numeric, chromatic, and geometric rules. It materializes through a process which rigorously meets the invariable protocols which are a kind of ritual. Visible and invisible become one, that is, the written word meets the experiences which it evokes, a link which translates into symbolic illegibility.
