María María Acha-Kutscher - Indignados. Nasty woman
Technique: Print on PVC
Artist Biography: María María Acha-Kutscher is a visual artist born in Lima, Peru, in 1968. In 2001 she moved to Madrid and since then has been involved in the independent art scene, participating in debates on cultural policies in the city. She currently co-directs the curatorial project Antimuseo and is editor of the CIIA's independent magazine.Women are the central axis of her artistic work, in which she focuses on history, the struggle for emancipation and equality, and the cultural construction of the feminine. María María organizes her work in long-term projects, each with its own language and methodology. She defines herself as a feminist artist because of the political dimension of her work, which has a double function: to be an artistic product and to constitute an instrument that can cover some social need and contribute to political transformations. One of her best known projects is "Women and Work", in which she compiled historical and contemporary images of women at work to highlight their role and contribution to society, as well as to address gender inequality in the workplace. Another of her series, "Indignadas", documents protest movements around the world, highlighting the presence and role of women in the struggle for social justice and equality.María María Acha-Kutscher's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums around the world, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Museo de Arte de Lima in Peru. In addition, her work has been presented at international art fairs, and she is represented by ADN gallery in Barcelona.Indignadas (Outraged Women) consists of a visual record of participation of women in public protests around the world, including social movements like 15M (Spain), Occupy Wall Street (NYC), and feminist movements like Femen, Pussy Riot, SlutWalk, and Alfombra Roja (Red Carpet, Peru). I turn photographs from press and witnesses into drawings that I prints onto large format tarps for exhibitions in public spaces. The aim of the Indignadas series is to make women's efforts more visible and place women at the center of these social struggles. The drawings show a female body as support for the political message.
