Vanitas

"Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas". Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. From this phrase from Ecclesiastes, the National Photography Prize winner Juan Manuel Castro Prieto creates a work that explores the fleeting nature of existence, the fragility of memory and the deterioration of one's own territory. The mortal condition of the human being becomes the central axis of the exhibition and of the three series that comprise it: 'Strangers', a symbolic, metaphorical and intimate photography spread over two decades and presented in a striking circular format; 'Ephemeral Landscapes', polyptychs with a layer of glass depicting impressive decadent landscapes; and 'Cabinet of Curiosities', the series of colour still lifes that draws directly from historical pictorial trends but also from his childhood memories, through significant objects photographed in places where no one lives anymore.
