The self-taught photographer Vari Caramés (Ferrol, Galicia, 1953) presents one of his most outstanding and personal series NADAR from November 17 to December 15, 2022 within the framework of the Photographic Encounters of Gijón directed by our photographic curator Esther Maestre.

Caramés began experimenting with photography at the age of 15 and, since then, has not ceased to create and research, using color and black and white indistinctly, playing with approaches and framing and tirelessly seeking the limits and new frontiers of the youngest of the Fine Arts.

His lens turns the ordinary into the extraordinary and the flaw into effect. Moments frozen in a timeless instant that seek to connect with the viewer, evoke memories, emotions and sensations in a world tinged with mystery and poetry.

Caramés grew up surrounded by art and painting and we can see that imprint in the almost pictorial approach that many of his series acquire. The pieces that make up NADAR are a selection of the enormous amount of negatives that the artist produced between 1986 and 1990 in a public swimming pool. The resulting set of blurred lines, floating bodies and contrasts of light and shadow reminds us of charcoal and manages to convey the weightlessness, the difficult materiality and subtlety of water.
