Unsettled

The title of Juan Uslé's new exhibition at Galeria Joan Prats, 'Unsettled', metaphorically alludes to painting, the central theme of all his work. Unsettled' means unstable, but also variable, restless, something that includes opposites, or a paradox. In Uslé's paintings the swathes of colour fluctuate, they have no definite beginning and end, and refer to the passing of time, the hours, the seasons, the changing landscapes, such as Bernia, a mountain range in the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula, a place of inspiration for Uslé, among many others. Juan Uslé's work reflects on the possibilities of painting. In his own words: "Speaking of painting, I would also speak of its tremor, of its 'non-fixation', of its journey or, better still, of what we understand as displacement".
