Juan Gopar - Walkabout. The traces of the song III
Artist Biography:
Juan Gopar (Arrecife, Lanzarote, 1958) manages to transfer in this painting one of the lichens that surround the Corona volcano in Lanzarote. This organism, which the artist contemplates when he walks through the area, is interesting for three reasons: for being the result of the symbiosis of fungi with unicellular algae, for inhabiting the brutality of this inhospitable landscape and finally, for the slowness of its growth. Thus, the lichen becomes a metaphor through which the artist reflects on time, the beauty that overcomes ruin and the representation of art as a mirror of reality. In his work, Gopar does not seek realism, but rather to capture the essence of the elements, which poetically symbolize values such as survival. The sensitive recreation of these organisms makes the painter, like an archaeologist, explore the strata of this element to reproduce them through the use of cellulose. In particular, this work from the Walkabout series reminds us that painting goes beyond time, space and reality. An element of nature can be represented in an unrealistic way and still connect to an audience that is moved by contemplating the life that emerges from the ashes.
