Description
Jordi Teixidor - Brindisi I, 1352

Technique: Painted wood

Artist Biography: Jordi Teixidor, born in Valencia in 1941, is considered one of the main representatives of abstraction in Spain. Identified with critical thinking and the modern tradition, his work seeks to capture the spirit of doubt and criticism, delving into abstraction and a rational, apollonian, balanced and strongly contained painting in the expressive elements. As opposed to seeking satisfaction, Teixidor's modernity is reflective and his work incites thought and rejects any narrative reading. Rather than being a "tour de force" about the possibilities of abstraction, his work should be understood as an aesthetic and intellectual reflection on the limits of painting, searching for the "non-painting" and the unrealizable longing to create the ultimate painting, expressing his feeling of ethical-political failure.Teixidor has formalized a serious sequence of images through the use of black, which constitutes one of the most outstanding tragic expressions of contemporary Spanish painting. His work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in institutions such as the Spanish Academy in Rome, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the UNAM Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City, the Contemporary Art Gallery of Bulgaria, Caja Burgos and IVAM, among others. In 1980, he participated in the exhibition "New Images from Spain" at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and his work is part of the collections of the Guggenheim in New York, MNCARS in Madrid, IVAM in Valencia, the Juan March Foundation, Bank of Spain Collection, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Stuveysan Collection in Amsterdam, the Patio Herreriano Museum, CAAM in Las Palmas, the MOMA in San Francisco, La Caixa Foundation and the Berkeley Museum.
