Moisés Yagües - Away from almost everything

Artist Biography: Moisés Yagües is a self-taught artist who works as a teacher of art education in Murcia. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in different cities around the world, including New Mexico, China, Germany, Slovenia, Barcelona and Madrid. Throughout his career, he has received several awards for his work. In his works, Yagües seeks to express his imaginary world and his internal affairs, through minimal stories and small individual oddities that he tries to defend from commonplaces. A recurring element in his symbolism is the shape of the head, which suggests many ideas and motivates his creation. According to the artist, the head is the place where small stories live, full of corners where ideas, desires and other secrets can be hidden. Yagües' works have multiple meanings and it is the viewer who brings a different point of view, which enriches or impoverishes the meaning of the work with its valuation.

 

Moisés Yagües (Murcia, 1972) imagines the inside of the head and the human body as a place where stories take place, where ideas come to life and make literal sense. His caricatured characters, full of energy and full of tenderness, are already provoking smiles in corners of the world after his exhibitions in Germany, Mexico, Chile, China, the United States and Japan, to name a few. In Yagües' imaginary, references and winks to the history of art stand out. This admiration for the masters translates in 'Parallel Universes' into two recreations of Mark Rothko and Pierre Mondrian, intervened by their recurring "assistants" who, with their rollers, ladders, scaffolding and paint buckets, are at pains to finish the work. These tiny characters also appear populating a game of Tetris, in which they contribute to bring order. His figuration of surreal situations and schematic characters finds its influences in comics, illustration, pop art and street art, among others. He continues to paint in search of the freest creation and a completely personal universe, with a fresh and casual style, a well-established iconography and a desire to tell stories that has also led him to a facet as an illustrator of books for children and adults. He has also been the recipient of several awards and grants such as the Casa Falconieri in Italy or the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation in Mallorca, and artistic residencies in China, Romania, Slovenia, Italy and Germany.
