Bernardí Roig - Je est un autre
Technique: Polyester resin and fluorescent.
Artist Biography: Bernardí Roig is a Spanish visual artist born in Palma de Mallorca in 1965. He is known for his multidisciplinary work that encompasses sculpture, photography, video, installation and drawing. His works tend to have a conceptual approach and his work is characterized by the exploration of themes such as identity, death, memory and perception.Bernardí Roig has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums in Spain and abroad, and has participated in international contemporary art biennials. His work can be found in major museum collections and private collections around the world.Among his most outstanding works are the series "Blackout", "Selfportrait", "Light and Matter" and "The Shadow of the Monster". His sculptures and human figures wrapped in bandages or covered in plastic have become a hallmark of his artistic style.Je est un autre (The Mirror), are two small figures, facing each other, crossed by a powerful fluorescent light between their legs. One is the distorted reflection of the other, like the image returned to us by the mirror of our own face; an image that no longer coincides with us and only reflects the absence of our true self. There is no longer room for the image to accommodate the eye, so everything is precipitated into an inner abyss. With the title Je est un autre, Rimbaud's famous phrase contained in one of The Seer's Letter to his friend Paul Demeny, where the poet assumes the loss of identity and the splitting through negation, this work shows a superposition of reflected identities. Any representation of identity contains the latent experience of its own disfigured image. The face no longer coincides with the face. We have been definitively evicted from our guarantees. That is what this little piece is about.
