Pep Guerrero - Untitled
Technique: Mixed
Artist Biography:Pep Guerrero (Puerto de Sóller, Mallorca, 1966) He began his artistic career in 1991, with an exhibition at the Lluc Fluxá Gallery in Palma. Since then he has not stopped participating in solo and group exhibitions, gaining special recognition both nationally and internationally. Throughout all these years he has exhibited in numerous galleries such as Kartner Gallery in Paris, Yvonamor Palix Fine Arts in Houston, Blanca Soto Gallery in Madrid or The Cynthia Cobett Gallery in New York among others. His work has been present in important international art fairs: Arte Fiera Bologna, Art Chicago, ARCO Madrid, FIAC Paris, ARTEBA Buenos Aires, The Art Hamptons New York, Art Miami, Art Basel Miami or Art Cologne are some examples. In the vast majority of these fairs he was presented by the Ferrán Cano Gallery in Palma, the gallery that represented him almost from the beginning until its closure in 2013. Guerrero is possibly one of the artists with his own style and language. Quickly identifiable, his works, the result of the combination of painting and collage, with the use of reproductions of images of Renaissance paintings, to other completely current, as well as selected patterned papers, such as landscapes of toile de Jouy or others that mimic animal skins, in which these are confused or rather, confuse us, in a kind of game between the real and the fictitious, between what is painted and what has been appropriated by the artist. Guerrero's works, with an aesthetic close to Kitch, Pop or Dadaism, have at the same time that air, that aura of classical work, with references to the great works of the painters of the Renaissance. In his painting we can appreciate an admiration and respect for the entire history of art, but at the same time he questions us about our closest reality, our uses and customs, our consumerist lifestyle. Guerrero has used beyond canvas and paper as supports, any object that has caught his attention. He began to recover objects and furniture that he found, with vintage aesthetics, on which he intervened with the same technique. He has intervened chairs, armchairs, bedside tables, lamps, scooters and skateboards, watering cans, shoes, bags, suitcases, even a foosball table or a ping pong table among many other objects. They are cheerful, fun works that immediately attract our gaze, and form a kind of puzzle in which everything has and finds its place, everything dialogues with everything, the classic with the contemporary, the elements and strokes that are used in some works can also be found in others. In his exhibitions he creates environments as scenographies, in which many of these objects intermingle with the paintings on canvas. Guerrero's work has transcended the exhibition space, collaborating with Ágatha Ruíz de la Prada or Tolo Crespí or the Camper brand.
