Rafael Lozano-Hemmer - Recurrent Anaximander

Artist Biography:'Recurrent Anaximander' is a generative animation presented on a custom-made circular LED screen. The piece shows a representation of the representation of the solar surface made from various algorithms (reaction-diffusion, Navier-Stokes, Voronoi and Perlin Noise) applied on an image from the space observatory, Solar DynamicsObservatory (SDO) that is updated daily by NASA. Thanks to the incorporation of small planets, the work acts as an eclipse simulator, thus paying homage to the pre-Socratic philosopher Anaximander of Miletos (610-545 BCE), whose name gives the piece its title. Considered one of the Seven Sages of Greece, he was the first thinker to predict a solar eclipse and to observe the gaseous atmosphere of the Sun and the solar protuberances, for which he must have used projections of the light of the Sun and the Moon by means of a specular camera obscura.
This work includes a certificate of authenticity. A certificate of authenticity is a document from an authoritative source that verifies the authentication value of the work of art.
