Alexandra Karakashian - Parting V
Artist Biography: Alexandra Karakashian (South Africa, 1988) is a South African artist living in Cape Town. Her work derives from her personal and family history and reflects on current issues of exile, migration and refugee status. Process and materiality are key to her practice. Employing used motor oil and salt as a medium for painting, he engages in ecological discussions, looming instability and subtle collapse; and the unethical exploitation of rapidly dwindling natural resources, particularly on the resource-rich African continent. In addition, he investigates notions of mourning, both individual and collective in nature, and the lamentation of the loss of land and those who have been "dispossessed". His work is part of private and public collections such as the Iziko National Gallery of South Africa in South Africa, the Spier Collection in South Africa, the Darvesh Collection in the United Arab Emirates, the Royal Portfolio Collection in South Africa, and the Luciano Benetton Collection in Italy.
