Angélica Arbulú - Road to Nowhere - Mauritania
Technique: Cotton printing
Artist Biography:A Mexican-born Spaniard, Angelica has lived on four continents and considers herself a cultural mix. Her quest is to capture the essence of the mundane. To make the ordinary seem unique.
"This is Angélica's strength, capturing people and places and making the everyday look beautiful and exotic." (Emma Fordham, artist) She sees photography as just the first step in the process, "sculpting" the image through the editing process to enhance its essence.
The desert surrounds the city and eats it. Dirt streets connect the bustle of the city with the sea, turning the desert into a silence between two notes. Mauritania was the last country in the world to abolish slavery in 1981. It took more years, until 2007, for it to be criminalized... even so, some estimate that up to 17% of the Haratine population is still in slavery. Many of the freed slaves continue to work for their former masters for lack of other opportunities. These roads - for many of those who kick them, they really lead nowhere.
