Alberto García-Alix - Elena Mar, odalisque in my backyard
Biography of the Artist: Alberto García-Alix was born on March 22, 1956 in León. When he was eleven years old he moved with his family to Madrid, where he currently lives. His first negatives date from 1976. At the beginning of the eighties he had his first individual exhibitions in Madrid galleries such as the Buades Gallery or the Moriarty Gallery, and in other international galleries such as the Portfolio Gallery in London. During the first edition of PhotoEspaña, in 1998, he held a large retrospective exhibition, with enormous public and critical success. He received the National Photography Award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1999, a period in which he began working with the Juana de Aizpuru Gallery in Spain and Kamel Mennour in France. Between 2003 and 2006 he resides in Paris where he makes a video trilogy alternating photographic and filmed images that represents the artist's incursion into the video format, a discipline that he continues to develop today. In 2009 he presented a retrospective exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía as well as at the Ullens Center in Beijing and the Maison de la Photographie in Moscow. Recently, he has had exhibitions at the Maison Européene de la Photographie in Paris, at the Photographers' Gallery in London, at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de León and at Tabacalera Promoción del Arte in Madrid. His work can be found in major international collections such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Spain); Fonds Nationales d'Art Contemporain (France) or Deutsche Börse (Germany), among others. García-Alix has combined his photographic activity with that of editor, being founder of the cultural magazine "El Canto de la Tripulación" (1989 to 1997), and more recently co-founder of the publishing house Cabeza de Chorlito, together with Frédérique Bangerter, an imprint under which he has published some of his most recent creations: El paraíso de los creyentes (2011); Diaporamas (2012); MOTO (2015) and Motorcycle Family Circus (2016).
