Juan Cuenca

Born in Spain in 1934.

He is an architect who comes from the world of art. Since his early youth he has been interested in art and especially in classical sculpture and the modern movement. Later he joined a group of artists who would form Equipo 57 (Agustín Ibarrola, Ángel Duarte, Juan Serrano, José Duarte and Juan Cuenca), alternating his work in painting, sculpture and design with his studies in architecture at the School of Madrid, which culminated in 1964, when Equipo 57 ceased its artistic activity.

Since then he has lived in Cordoba where he did most of his architectural work, which is characterized by its relationship with the urban and natural environment and therefore its insertion into the landscape. A constant in his architecture is the attention to the incidence of natural light in the interior spaces.

His work deals with a wide variety of typologies, both in the historic and the new city. He is also interested in the design of the city, working as a team in the urban plans of Cordoba and Seville as well as in urban design in the historic city and the new city.

Cuenca has received numerous distinctions and awards, including: Medal of Merit in Fine Arts and the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Award (both with Equipo 57). In 2008 he was awarded the Medal of Andalusia.

He has also been awarded the First National Furniture Prize by the Ministry of Housing (with Team 57). He has also been awarded the Prize for the Best Architectural Work (1989) and the Design Prize (1993), both awarded by the Association of Architects of Cordoba in 1989 and 1995.

In 2014 his work "the Roman Bridge of Cordoba and its surroundings" was awarded the "Europa Nostra" prize in the European Community.

In 2016 the retrospective of Juan Cuenca, Del plano al Espacio. Art, Architecture and Design, at the Vimcorsa hall in Cordoba, curated by Angustias Freijo Mouliaa.
