Jong Oh
Jong Oh is a South Korean artist born in Mauritania in 1981 who currently lives and works in New York. His artistic practice is unique in that he creates minimal sculptures in situ that respond to the given spatial situation, using limited materials such as ropes, chains, fishing line, methacrylate, wooden and metal rods and painted threads. His works appear to float and connect or intersect depending on the viewer's spatial relationship to them, creating the illusion of additional dimensions in a simple three-dimensional space. Jong also uses lighting and shadows to create compositions that favor the effect of optical illusion and the dialogue of lines and planes. In this sense, his practice challenges the traditional assumption in sculpture of dense masses and heavy objects.
The viewer's experience becomes a meditation on the whimsy of human perception, and is achieved through an in-depth exploration of the work and the negative space resulting from the artist's intervention. Jong invites the viewer to question their own perception and their relationship to the space around them, offering a space for contemplation and meditation as opposed to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Jong has exhibited in the U.S., Korea, Mexico and Europe, and his work belongs to public collections such as the Maxine & Stuart Frankel Foundation in Michigan (USA) and the Kablanc Otazu Foundation in Navarra (Spain).
