Joël Andrianomearisoa

Joël Andrianomearisoa is an artist born in Antananarivo, Madagascar in 1977, who lives and works between Paris, Magnat-l'Étrange and Antananarivo. His work spans different media and materials, seeking to give form to non-explicit, often abstract narratives. Her practice uses a variety of media, including sculpture, installation, craft, textiles, the written word and collaboration - drawing on her Malagasy roots, a country of diverse cultural influences. Imbued with complex emotional experiences, his delicate, often ambiguous works are considered an ongoing series of constantly evolving exercises that consider the aesthetics and architecture of feelings that everyone perceives, but cannot put a name to. Andrianomearisoa has represented the first Madagascar Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, and has participated in several group exhibitions and solo exhibitions at prominent institutions. In addition to his artistic career, Joël Andrianomearisoa is the founder and artistic director of Hakanto Contemporary, an independent non-profit space for artists in Antananarivo, Madagascar, supported by the Yavarhoussen Fund. Andrianomearisoa is also a DESA architect, having studied at the Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris, France. Public collections in which his work is held include the Musée les Abattoirs (France), the Studio Harlem Museum in New York, the National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, the Zeitz MOCAA in South Africa and the Zinsou Collection in Benin. His work has been exhibited in several group and solo exhibitions, including Ubuntu, Un rêve lucide, Palais de Tokyo (France), Witness: Afro Perspectives From Jorge M. Perez Collection (USA), Love etc.... Musée Bargoin (France), and Divine Comedy, among others.
