Description
GERARDO RUEDA - S.T. Serigraphy (20/140)

Biography of the Artist: (Madrid, 1926- id., 1996) Spanish painter and one of the most outstanding members of abstract art in our country. For his pictorial constructions he used a wide range of materials (cardboard, wood, canvas, etc.), with which he sought to create a game of radical contrasts of textures; as for color, he sometimes adopted monochrome (Azul, 1972). He participated in the Havana Hispano-American Biennial (1953) and the Venice Biennial (1960). In 1963 he founded with F. Zóbel the Museum of Abstract Art of Cuenca. Among his works include White, red and black (1975), Alea (1978) and the stained glass windows of the cathedral of Cuenca (1991). In 1989 he donated part of his graphic work to the National Library.

Gerardo Rueda Salaberry (Madrid, April 23, 1926 - May 25, 1996) was a Spanish painter and sculptor, related to the history of Spanish abstract painting in the 20th century. He founded the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, together with Fernando Zóbel and Gustavo Torner. Biography Rueda's early studies took place in Madrid, most of them at the Lycée Français. Rueda receives, in the forties, painting classes with Ángel Mínguez, a history painter. In that decade the artist made several paintings of the Garden of Villa San Juan, in San Rafael (Segovia). During 1943 he copies in a small sketchbook numerous cubist paintings, which have a deep impression on him. He makes some collages with the theme of still life, also of cubist inspiration, and continues with landscape painting. He also takes sketches of the human figure. The landscape visions focus his interest on buildings, urban groupings and volumes of houses. In 1949 he studies law while he continues with his pictorial work. First collective exhibition of the artist, "Fin de temporada" at the Galería de la Revista de Occidente in Madrid. His first collages date from 1953 and are made with different materials (leather, paper, textile, etc.). In them he combines the presence of collage and pencil drawing. Very interested in graphic work, he soon became aware that printmaking constituted a language of its own. In his beginnings, he found that silkscreen printing was the most appropriate technique for the production of graphic art, printed in his first period by Abel Martín and later by Javier Cebrián, in Cuenca.
